Maya Deren wurde 1917 als Eleonora Derenkowsky in Kiew geboren. Als Opfer von Antisemitismus floh sie 1922 mit ihren Eltern in die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika.

In den 1940er Jahren begann sie an experimentellen Stummfilmen zu arbeiten. In ihrer kurzen Schaffensperiode prägte sie die Avant-Garde Filmszene Amerikas stark. Mit ihrem Ableben 1961 hinterließ sie ein Werk von sechs Kurzfilmen und weiteren unvollendeten Filmen, zwei Büchern und einigen Publikationen über die Kunstform Film, das die Aufmerksamkeit der Gesellschaft zu Experimentalfilmen wendete und Filmschaffende bis heute beeinflusst.

Inspiriert von den teilweise abstrakten Inhalten der Filme Deren´s komponiert der Gitarrist Sebastian Weiss Musik zu ihren Stummfilmen. Er respektiert die bewusste Entscheidung der Regisseurin, die Filme ohne Musik zu veröffentlichen und schätzt die Stummfilme als fertiges Produkt, sein Schaffen sieht er eher als eigenständiges Kunstprojekt, als eine bloße Ergänzung von Musik zu den Filmen. In der ungewöhnlichen Besetzung von Streichquartett mit elektrischer Gitarre verarbeitet, begleitet, verstärkt beziehungsweise kontrastiert er mit seiner Musik das in den Filmen Gezeigte. Der Musik ein Genre zuzuschreiben ist nicht einfach, starke Einflüsse kommen jedoch von Komponist*innen des 20. Jahrhunderts wie Igor Stravinsky oder Maurice Ravel, aber auch von Künstler*innen aus dem Bereich des Art-Pop wie Björk und Radiohead, beziehungsweise aus der elektronischen Musik von Jan Jelinek und Aphex Twin. Die Mischung aus wiederkehrenden, berührenden Motiven, teilweise dissonanten Klängen und sphärischen Klanglandschaften, lädt Zuhörende dazu ein, die Gedanken schweifen zu lassen und sich im Idealfall zu neuen Ideen und Erkenntnissen inspirieren zu lassen.
Gemeinsam mit dem Noreia String Quartett führt Sebastian Weiss die Musik live zu den Filmen auf und verspricht Zuseher*innen und Zuhörer*innen eine außergewöhnliche und unvergessliche Erfahrung.

Maya Deren was born Eleonora Derenkowsky in Kiev in 1917. A victim of anti-Semitism, she fled with her parents to the United States in 1922.
In the 1940s, she began working on experimental silent films. During her brief creative period, she had a strong influence on the avant-garde film scene in America. With her passing in 1961, she left behind a body of work of six short films and other unfinished films, two books and several publications on film as an art form that turned society’s attention to experimental films and continues to influence filmmakers today.

Inspired by the sometimes abstract content of Deren’s films, guitarist Sebastian Weiss composes music for her silent films. He respects the director’s conscious decision to release the films without music and appreciates the silent films as a finished product, seeing his work as an independent art project rather than a mere addition of music to the films. In the unusual instrumentation of string quartet with electric guitar, he processes, accompanies, amplifies or contrasts with his music what is shown in the films. It is not easy to attribute a genre to the music, but strong influences come from 20th century composers such as Igor Stravinsky or Maurice Ravel, but also from artists from the field of art-pop such as Björk and Radiohead, or from the electronic music of Jan Jelinek and Aphex Twin. The mixture of recurring, touching motifs, sometimes dissonant sounds and spherical soundscapes, invites listeners to let their minds wander and ideally be inspired to new ideas and insights.
Together with the Noreia String Quartet, Sebastian Weiss performs the music live to the films and promises viewers and listeners an extraordinary and unforgettable experience.

Noreia String Quartet:

The Noreia String Quartet consists of four young women* who study at the Gustav Mahler Private University in Klagenfurt/Celovec and at the MUK – Music and Art Private University of the City of Vienna and have been making music together as a quartet for almost two years. In their work, they have dedicated themselves to creating unusual and time-relevant concert concepts, as they share an interest in unearthing hidden treasures and bringing them to the stage.
