Sean Noonan Pavees Dance Electric Trio
(soulful harmolodic funk/punk jazz)

Sean Noonan – drums/compositions/storytelling (with rhythm section from Shatner’s Bassoon, Leeds, UK)
Johnny Richards – keyboards/electronics
Michael Bardon – bass/electronics

Pavees Dance Electric Keyboard Trio is the next chapter in Brooklyn based drummer Sean Noonan Pavees Dance series which is a fermentation of soulful harmolodic funk/punk jazz which consist of lyrics by Malcolm Mooney (original singer of CAN) to the drum-n-bass grooves of Jamaaladeen Tacuma (Ornette Coleman’s Primetime) to Punk Riffs of Marc Ribot and even a twist of free jazz from pianist Alex Marcelo from Yusef Lateef.

Pavees Dance Electric Keyboard Trio is also a direct decedent of “Born to Brew” 2012 collaboration with analog virtuoso Matthew Bourne where this trio will continue to explore Psychedelic shape-shifting improvisations, stories of minimalism and intoxication that wander through dense soundscapes. Like if Cecil Taylor and Samuel Beckett were out on a night of romance and in quest of a good bar fight.

UK Review from Be-Bop Spoken Here –

„Noonan entered the ring clad in a hooded gold coloured boxing gown looking mean, focussed on the job ahead. Round 1! Noonan was to tell us a story; a fairytale, a Grimm tale, a nightmare tale. The New Yorker’s vocal style was akin to that of a performance poet delivering crazy lyrics with a wide-eyed stare into the abyss and then a wide-eyed stare into the soul of each and everyone present. This was Zappa, this was Beefheart, this was Dr.Chad, this was Zorn, this was Norman Bates and by the way … Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? He assured us that he was abandoned at birth and brought up by a coyote – I was tempted to believe him! Pecos Bill and Silke from the Sea were weird tales from Noonan’s vertile but weird imagination which can be heard on the CD Set the Hammer Free. A journey across a Bavarian landscape featured an appropriate comic touch from Bourne. There was a pause in Noonan’s storytelling to showcase some serious heavyweight improv from the duo in Improv Bouts and it produced some breathtaking playing from both musicians and it all but drew the breath of the audience. Noonan is a superb technician, so much so that he can juggle sight reading and invention with the humourous strand running through the material (instrumental and vocal). Drunken Landlady, supposedly inspired by Noonan’s Brooklyn landlady seeking „favours“‚ had the audience rolling in the aisles – funny that he now lives a travelling life away from the Big Apple. A heart felt finale was John Henry. This was another tale, a true tale, about the eponymous hero and his heroic efforts in challenging the introduction of the steamhammer and it produced yet more brilliance at the drum kit and keyboards. This was a memorable night for those with a sense of humour.“

Sean Noonan Biography

Afro-Celtic Punk-Jazz drummer, composer, and storyteller Sean Noonan describes himself as an ‚Irish griot,’ one who collects tales, legends, and life stories over the course of his journeys and transforms them into the raw material that enlightens not only his drumming, but the entirety of the music he creates; narrating and improvising stories from behind his drum set as if Samuel Beckett were on drums.  His recent release, Pavees Dance is a fermentation of soulful harmolodic rock consisting of lyrics by Malcolm Mooney (original singer of CAN) and free funk prophetJamaaladeen Tacuma (Ornette Coleman’s Primetime). In 2005 Noonan was awarded a commission from the American Composers Forum to premiere original works formulated by a „wandering folk“ theory that adapts and re-interpret folklore traditions from a modern perspective from diverse cultures. In December 2008, with support from Meet the Composer, Noonan traveled with African musician Abdoulaye Diabate, researching griot lore from Bamako, Mali, producing the album „Boxing Dreams“ that merges Bardic (Irish) and Griot folk (Malian) traditions.  Thus helping coin Afro-Celtic punk-jazz, his „wandering folk“ theory has led Noonan towards expressing a more personal form of prose in his storytelling style.

“…it’s safe to say that you’ve never heard music like this before…will have you wondering why Sean Noonan isn’t a household
name.”
– Mark Saleski, Blogcritics.org

Saleski’s comments apply equally towards A Gambler’s Hand where Noonan composes music for string quartet as if its an extension of the drum set uniting avant-garde jazz and classical forms where currently he is composing a set of 39 „Improv Canons“ and other works.   Deeply inspired by American rhythm experimentalists Henry Cowell and Conlon Nancarrow, Sean’s evolving drum language and varied compositional interests, and his inclination to stir diverse elements together into something wildly imaginative often turns out to be unexpectedly coherent.

„You think this might be boring? C’mon man, relax, this is Sean Noonan…it’s like nothing else out there.“ Something Else! S. Victor Aaron“Menacingly surreal, often assaultive, a feast for fans of dark, challenging music…it’s a category unto itself – and one of the best in any style of music. Scary Stuff from Sean Noonan.“ Lucid Culture

From Brockton, Massachusetts the “City of Champions” and Rocky Marciano, Noonan is a Berklee College graduate in Music Education and Masters in Music Composition from the Aaron Copland Music School.  In 1999 Sean Noonan first came to the public’s attention as the drummer of The HUB, one of several underground bands that emerged from the Knitting Factory scene.  As with the jazz-punk trio THE HUB, Noonan formed a duo project (CHiPS) with Aram Bajakian and in 2003 after recovering from a near-fatal car wreck in Italy Noonan decided his next project would combine his two musical loves of Jazz and African rhythms.

Noonan has has performed over 500 concerts in over 15 countries in numerous prestigious venues, cinemas, theaters, jazz and rock venues and international festivals such as London Jazz Festival, Bergen Natt Jazz , and Jazz Liege to name a few.  As a producer, Noonan has independently released over 19 albums casting some of the finest musicians such as Marc Ribot, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Mat Maneri, Susan McKeown, Abdoulaye Diabate, Malcolm Mooney, Aram Bajakian, Tim Dahl (The HUB), Matthew Bourne, Kirk Knuffke, Momenta Quartet, Shanir Blumenkranz, Norbert Buerger, and Alex Marcelo.

Victor Aaron“Noonan strikes again conducting a string quartet with his drumsticks…like Bela Bartok french kissing with John Zorn. I wonder when the man finally will get some serious recognition in Culture loving Flanders?“ Rifraf (BE)-Bootsie

„The drummer and composer Sean Noonan approaches postmodern jazz and world music from the same angle of self-discovery ….he manages to make his pieces speak coherently, and in a unified voice.“ The New York Times

„The drummer is a musical terrorist at heart…well-conceived and expertly arranged and performed pieces that reveal not merely an inner logic, but an external one as well. “ Thom Jurek-allmusic

„This is not the typical release but an experience. A dynamic and virtually flawless execution of art at an apex of creativity few can match.“ Brent Black @CriticalJazz

„Menacingly surreal, often assaultive, a feast for fans of dark, challenging music…it’s a category unto itself – and one of the best albums of 2012 in any style of music. Scary Stuff from Sean Noonan.“ Lucid Culture

“ ….he succeeds at bridging the gap during the preponderance of these fascinating arrangements, constructed upon a multicultural array of cadences. Here, jazz vernaculars and birthrights are fused into a bold and beautiful chain of musical events, often enamored with vigor and finesse.“ www.ejazznews.com

„Stories to Tell,“ the new album by drummer Sean Noon’s group Brewed by Noon, is a funky feast of music …..bursting with talented musicians and interesting sounds ….“ All About Jazz New York

IncontriAMOci | Ausstellungseröffnung | Villa For Forest
