EL GRECO
A new musical project created by outstanding artists

Jorgos Skolias – vocal | Joachim Mencel – piano | Dj Krime – gramophones | Andrzej Święs – double bass | Harry Tanschek – drums

Their work is a unique fusion of jazz, club music, world music and poetry.
“El Greco” performs Joachim Mencel’s musical compositions written for the most distinguished world- renowned poems by Emily Dickinson, Oscar Wilde, Cyprian Kamil Norwid, Jan Kochanowski and others.

“… for some time now, Mencel’s compositions have been a combination of elements of jazz and jazz improvisation with the tones of club and world music. The result is brilliant. ‘El Greco’ mixes styles in the most natural way – smoothly, not pushy, as if one style ensues from another. Much credit goes to the accompanying artists. The whole sounded splendidly. … Mencel achieved something great: he filled the performance with true emotions.”

Tomasz Handzlik, Gazeta Wyborcza

Jorgos Skolias – a phenomenal vocalist who successfully uses various vocal techniques, including throat singing, an exceptionally rare technique which allows a singer to create three pitches at the same time.

Joachim Mencel – one of the best jazz pianists in Poland, a distinguished composer and a music producer.

Dj Krime – a popular dj and a musician, a winner of prestigious turntable contests, an exceptionally creative artist.

Andrzej Święs – a leading double-bass player on the Polish jazz scene, a prizewinner of many musical competitions.

Harry Tanschek – an extremely versatile drummer, performing equally adroitly both jazz and ethnic music.

They all collaborated with musicians whose names must seem impressive: John Zorn, Nigel Kennedy, Dino Saluzzi, Lee Konitz, David Friedman, Ronie Burrage, Steve Logan, Richard Galiano, Ewa Bem, Anna Maria Jopek, Andrzej Cudzich, Janusz Muniak, Tomasz Stańko, Piotr Wojtasik and others.

Now they formed “El Greco” – a super-band, an absolute sensation!

Intentional & Random: a festival | Villa For Forest

Villa For Forest, Viktringer Ring 21, 9020 Klagenfurt Join us for an evening of music that explores the boundaries of sound and performance.

Beginning at 18:30, the event will open with a collaborative sound installation Quotidian Reminiscence in the garden of Villa for Forest. The sonic positions of the installation are distributed across the outside space, inviting listeners to roam around and encounter dialogues among eight micro-compositions that capture moments of habitual personal contexts. The installation will remain active throughout the entire event, providing an immersive sonic backdrop to three distinctive concerts. At 19:30, the first concert features a new work by Klagenfurt-based composer Bastien Brännland, alongside Matthew Schlomowitz's Letter Piece #5: Northern Cities, for two players performing music, actions, and text; Alban Berg’s 4 Stücke, Op. 5, which delves into virtuosic atonality through extended techniques such as flutter-tonguing and extreme dynamics; and John Zorn’s seminal "game piece" Cobra, where performers shape the music in real time through cues and gestures. The 20:30 concert showcases Julius Eastman's minimalist masterpiece Stay On It – a work by a composer whose brilliant contributions were almost completely lost but have recently achieved high acclaim – paired with Peter Ablinger's noise piece Nanophony for soft sounds and loud amplification. The final concert at 21:30 will conclude the evening with an experimental improvisation designed and performed by a quintet of composer-performers, sympathetically agitated by Christopher A. Williams.

From the opening collaborative sound installation to the final improvisation set, Intentional & Random promises a unique journey through sound, intermedia and performance. Whether you're a seasoned experimental music enthusiast or a curious first-time listener, this event offers a unique opportunity to explore the frontiers of musical expression.

All are welcome!

Autorenlesung | Literatur- und Dichterkreis Klagenfurt | Villa For Forest
