Seit zehn Jahren machen der Akkordeonist Klaus Paier und die Cellistin Asja Valcic im Duo Musik, die Publikum wie Kritik begeistert: „Atemberaubend“ urteilt zum Beispiel Der Spiegel, ein „packendes Zusammenspiel“ hört der britische Guardian. Ihre gemeinsame Reise begann 2009 mit dem Debüt „À Deux“. Seitdem machen Paier und Valcic die Kombination Akkordeon-Cello zu einem unvergleichlichen Klangerlebnis.
Ihr Jubiläumsalbum „Vision for Two – 10 Years“ steht nun für eine Bestandsaufnahme, aber auch für die fortwährende Neuerfindung und den Ausblick dieses visionären Duos. Schon der Titeltrack breitet gleich zum Einstieg alle musikalischen Errungenschaften aus: Beide, Paier wie Valcic, kommen ursprünglich aus der Klassik, haben sich ihr aber abgewandt, um durch stilistische Offenheit zu einer ganz eigenen, universellen Tonsprache zu gelangen. Stets ist der Klang ihr Ausgangspunkt, das seidige und geschmeidige, in der Tongestaltung klassische Spiel, das ihre Musik zeitlos macht. Dazu kommt der vom Augenblicks- und Freiheitsgedanken des Jazz getragene Spirit, der sich mit weltmusikalischen Einflüssen verbindet. Eine enorme, fast filmische Bildhaftigkeit ihrer Stücke ist das Resultat. Paier und Valcic laden den Hörer ein, tief in eine vielschichtige wie faszinierende Klangwelt einzutauchen.
Die Stücke auf „Vision for Two“ belegen die einmaligen kompositorischen, kreativen wie gestalterischen Qualitäten dieses traumwandlerisch agierenden Duos. „Straight Thirteen“ groovt mit seiner vom vibrierenden ungeraden Takt aufgeladenen repetitiven Hookline. Melancholisch-dramatisch ertönt „Angela“, „Hidden Thread“ dagegen ist impressionistisch gefärbt und „A Love’s Delight“ greift südamerikanische Elemente auf. Während sich Valcic mit „Dans l’esprit de Debussy“ vor Debussy verneigt, hat Paier die swingende Hommage „Mozart Incognito“ an einen anderen Meister der abendländischen Kunstmusik komponiert. Bevor das Album mit der Bandoneon-Ballade „El Alba“ schließt, verrät der Titel eines mit perkussiven Elementen spannungsvoll verdichteten Jazz-Latin-Blues, in welcher Phase sich Paier und Valcic nach zehn Jahren sehen: „Moving On“. Beide haben mit ihrer Vision vom Zusammenspiel zu zweit Außerordentliches erreicht – und noch viel vor.
Vision for Two – 10 Years
Accordionist Klaus Paier and cellist Asja Valcic have been making music as a duo for ten years. Their playing has kept audiences delighted and critics enthralled: “Breathtaking”, said the magazine Der Spiegel; they are “a captivating match” (The Guardian). Their journey together began in 2009 with their debut album “À Deux”, and since then Paier and Valcic have proceeded to make their unique accordion-plus-cello sound into a thing of wonder.
This tenth anniversary album “Vision for Two – 10 Years” is to some extent a conspectus, but also shows how this visionary duo continues to reinvent themselves and refresh their outlook. A panoply of what they have achieved musically is right there from the start of the title track. Both Paier and Valcic have their musical origins in the classical domain, but have moved on from it in a spirit of stylistic openness, and found a musical language which is theirs yet universal. The sound is always their starting point: they have a finesse and eloquence from classical music, combined with the free-thinking, quicksilver instinctiveness of jazz, and influences from many parts of the world. What results is capacious, widescreen music, a multi-layered and fascinating sound world in which Paier and Valcic invite listeners to immerse themselves.
The tracks of “Vision for Two“ demonstrate this duo’s unique compositional talent and creativity – and also their capacity to dream. “Straight Thirteen” has an infectious groove, its repeated melodic hook set against a lively asymmetric beat. “Angela” has a melancholy and dramatic feel, “Hidden Thread” has impressionistic colours, and “A Love’s Delight” more than a hint of South America. While Valcic salutes Debussy, Paier pays a swinging homage to Mozart. The album comes to a close with the bandoneon ballad “El Alba”. But just before that final tune there is a short, highly percussive Latin blues number, and ist title neatly sums up where Paier and Valcic now see themselves as they mark a decade of music-making: “Moving On”. They have indeed achieved remarkable things through their vision of dialogue and interplay – and intend to do much more.

Klaus Paier gehört zu den großen europäischen Akkordeonisten von Weltruf. Seine Musik steckt voll überbordender musikalischer Kreativität und Energie. Gerade der Jazz, mit seinen vielfältigen musikalischen Möglichkeiten und Freiheiten, ist für ihn von unschätzbarer Bedeutung.
Als österreichischer Akkordeonist und Komponist wandte sich Klaus Paier bereits während seines Musikstudiums am Konservatorium in Klagenfurt verschiedenen musikalischen Genres zu, um sie zu einem unverwechselbaren eigenen Stil zu verschmelzen. Immer auf der Suche nach der größtmöglichen Gestaltungsfreiheit, tut er dies in den unterschiedlichsten Besetzungen und Akzentuierungen: seit 1997 im Trio mit Stefan Gfrerrer am Bass und Roman Werni am Schlagzeug, seit 2000 mit dem Saxophonisten Gerald Preinfalk und seit 2008 im Duo mit der kroatischen Cellistin Asja Valcic.
Von Beginn an erforscht Klaus Paier den Klang des Akkordeons und versucht spieltechnisch wie kompositorisch die Grenzen des Instruments auszudehnen. Dies führte dazu, dass er nach eigenen Ideen und Plänen sein eigenes Akkordeon Passion konstruierte: ein speziell leichtes und handliches Akkordeon mit besten Klangeigenschaften und Einzeltonerweiterung für die linke Hand (Quintsystem). Paiers unerschöpflicher melodischer Einfallsreichtum und das für ihn typische, spannungsgeladene, durch Pausen Räume schaffende Spiel, gewinnen mit Passion noch mehr Dynamik und Klangfarben denn je.
Neben zahlreichen CD-Produktionen (ACT) führten internationale Tourneen Klaus Paier durch ganz Europa, sowie Russland, Ägypten, USA, Kanada, Algerien, Vietnam, Israel, Marocco und Japan. 2011 erhält er als erster österreichischer Akkordeonist in Moskau den „Silver Disc Preis“ – eine Auszeichnung für Akkordeonisten und ihre aussergewöhnlichen Leistungen für das Instrument. Seine CDs „Movimiento“ und „Live“ wurden für den österreichischen Musikpreis, den „Amadeus Award“, nominiert.
Klaus Paier präsentiert sich als ein Künstler, der seiner Zeit oftmals einen Schritt voraus ist, mit der Fähigkeit, seine eigene Musik immer wieder auf eine neue Ebene zu heben.
Klaus Paier is in the league of the great European accordionists with an international reputation. His music abounds with exuberant musical creativity and energy. Especially jazz, with its multifaceted musical possibilities and freedom, is of inestimable importance for him.
As an Austrian accordionist and composer, Klaus Paier was already focusing on a variety of musical genres during his studies at the Klagenfurt State Conservatorium and has melded these to create an unmistakable personal style. Ever in search of the greatest possible freedom of expression, he works with various different formations, each with its own accent: since 1997 in a trio with Stefan Gfrerrer on bass and Roman Werni on drums, since 2000 with saxophonist Gerald Preinfalk and since 2008 in a duo with the Croatian cellist, Asja Valcic.
From the very beginning, Klaus Paier has explored the sound of the accordion and sought to expand the instrument’s limits in the realms of technique and composition. This has led to him developing his own Passion accordion using his own ideas and designs: an especially light and manageable accordion with the best acoustic qualities and single tone options for the left hand (Freebass-quintsystem). Paier’s inexhaustible melodic resourcefulness and ingenuity as well as his signature style of playing characterized by the use of pauses to create free spaces gain more dynamism and acoustic color and depth with the Passion than ever before.
In addition to numerous CD productions (ACT), international tours have led Klaus Paier through all of Europe, as well as to Russia, Egypt, the USA, Canada, Algeria, Vietnam, Israel, Morocco and Japan. In 2011 in Moscow, he was the first Austrian accordionist to receive the „Silver Disc Prize“ – a distinction for accordionists and their exceptional achievements rendered in the interest of the instrument. His CDs „Movimiento“ and „Live“ were nominated for the Austrian music prize, the „Amadeus Award.“
Klaus Paier presents himself as an artist who is often ahead of his time with the capacity to repeatedly take his own music to a whole new level.

Asja Valcic schloss als hochbegabte Schülerin mit 18 Jahren die Musikakademie in ihrer Heimatstadt Zagreb ab. Danach folgten Studien an dem Tschaikowsky Konservatorium in Moskau und an der Hochschule für Musik in Detmold. Sie hat als Solistin u.a. unter Zubin Mehta und Kazushi Ono gespielt, zu ihren Kammermusikpartnern zählten Mitglieder bedeutender Ensembles wie des Alban Berg, Brodsky und Melos Quartett. 1995 wurde sie in Frankreich Gewinnerin des „Concours international de jeunes concertistes de Douai“.
Außerhalb der Klassik-Welt führt das Cello eine wohlklingende, aber weitgehend unauffällige Existenz. Vor diesem Hintergrund nimmt Asja Valcic in der europäischen Musikszene eine herausragende Position ein. Parallel zu ihren Engagements und Aufnahmen im Klassik-Fach hat sich Asja Valcic zunehmend der Improvisation und neuen Ausdrucksformen für ihr Instrument zugewandt. Das von ihr mitbegründete radio.string.quartet.vienna (seit 2004) sowie das Duo mit dem österreichischen Akkordeonisten und Komponisten Klaus Paier (2009) stehen gleichermaßen für stilistische Grenzgänge, die international hohe Anerkennung finden. Seit 2012 ist sie auch ständiges Mitglied des Iiro Rantala String Trios. Die gebürtige Kroatin arbeitet als Arrangeurin, Komponistin sowie Dozentin.
„Als eine Musikerin, die in der Kammermusik groß geworden ist, eignet sich Asja Valcic den Jazz mit nachdrücklicher und ungewöhnlicher Vititalität an“, wie es in einer Kritik im britischen GUARDIAN heißt. „Aus Valcics Cello entströmt vom wuchtigen Basspizzicati bis zum wispernden Flageoletti alles, was sich mit Fingern und Bogen den Saiten entlocken läßt“, schreibt die BADISCHE ZEITUNG. „Sie ist eine mit allen, auch teuflischen, Spielwassern gewaschene Instrumentalistin“, hebt das Kulturmagazin MIKADO (Hessischer Rundfunk) hervor.

As a highly talented student, Asja Valcic, already at 18 completed the music academy in
her home city of Zagreb. She followed that with studies at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow and at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold. She has given solo performances among others under the direction of Zubin Mehta and Kazushi Ono; her chamber music partners have included members of distinguished ensembles such as Alban Berg, Brodsky and the Melos Quartet. She was awarded the „Concours international de jeunes concertistes de Douai“ in France in 1995.
The cello leads a sonorous, if not largely inconspicuous, existence outside of the classical music world. Emerging from this background, the cellist, Asja Valcic has solidified a conspicuous place for herself in the European music scene. Parallel to her engagements and recordings in classical subjects, Asja Valcic has increasingly turned to improvisation and new
forms of expression for her instrument. Both the radio.string.quartet.vienna, which she cofounded in 2004, as well as duos with the Austrian accordionist and composer, Klaus Paier (2009) represent stylistic crossovers, which enjoy international recognition. Since 2012 she is also a member of Iiro Rantala String Trio. The native of Croatia works as an arranger, composer and lecturer.
