CHIAO-HUA CHANG – erhu
Born in Chiayi, Taiwan, Chang is living in Vienna as a freelance musician and erhu-teacher since 2013.
Playing not only traditional music but also combines musically the eastern and western cultures and she also concerns herself with the international project FREE FORMS OF MUSIC.
From 2001 to 2013 she taught erhu in Taiwan, where her lively and humorous
teaching style was greatly appreciated.
In 2001 she obtained her bachelor-degree in erhu from Shih-Chien University and in 2008 she completed her master-degree from the „Graduate Institute of Ethnomusicology“ at „Tainan National University of the Arts“ with her master thesis on the indigenous people of „Tsou“.
Since 2014, Chang is a sought-after erhu soloist and plays with many domestic and international musicians and ensembles.
Erhu is a two-string Chinese string instrument, over whose resonance body a snakeskin is stretched, generating the characteristic sound of this instrument. According to historical record, the erhu has been mentioned for the first time about a thousand years ago in the Tang Dynasty. In the 1920s, composer Liu Tianhua adapted some playing techniques of the western violin to the Chinese instrument. Through these innovations the erhu developed since then to a solo instrument with the for it so typical expressiveness.
